Before it was even mentioned in the Bleach series, there were several Japanese fanart sites which had fanart of a father-son relationship between Ukitake and Hitsugaya. When Ukitake's profile was released in volume 18 of the manga it states that Ukitake was one-sided liking for in which he obsessively offers Hitsugaya food. It is because the sound of their names "Jyuushirou" and "Toushirou" being similar. Shortly after, the anime followed that fact and episodes 67, and 68-69, Kon's Shinigami Zukan segment featured just that.
